While traveling on the Saint-Laurent coast by the 132 Est, my trip made me go through the city of Rimouski. As I’m in Matane, I’ve always heard about Rimouski: it’s one of the biggest places around. But what I didn’t knew about is that you can go for the visit of a submarine, in Rimouski. Yes, a submarine, in a city.

The beast is named the Onondaga, and it’s a real submarine that criss-crossed the Atlantic from 1967 to 2000.
The visit requires buying a 16$ ticket. And every single one of these are worth it. This is the only submarine you can visit in the whole Québec…
The first part of the visit is about the exterior of the submarine, to explain the main features : antennas, snorkel (as it’s a hybrid submarine, I’ll go to that in a minute), sonar… and everything related to the manoeuvrability : impellers, rudders, fins…
Then you finally enter the submarine and, oh boy… There are so much things…
The visit is self-guided but enhanced by audio-tour.
As I walked through the submarine, I was amazed by the incredible feeling of “It’s real…”. The submarine is shown in the exact same shape than when it was in service.

I won’t say anything more about the visit because I simply can’t. It’s indescribable. The way it looks, the way it feels inside… Visiting the Onondaga is a truly unique experience.
To sum up, I will highly recommend you to spend a good hour to discover the mysteries and the life inside a submarine. It’s really impressive to discover that 80 persons could live up to 3 months secluded from the wolrd.
